Sen. Jim Mountain Inhofe

Yes, “Mountain” really is his middle name and, apparently even by his parent’s standards, this guy really is something more than a mere pile of poo.

To wit:

I’m, for one — I know it’s not politically correct to say it — I believe in racial and ethnic profiling. I think if you’re looking at people getting on an airplane and you have X amount of resources to get into it, you get at the targets, and not my wife.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, (R.) Oklahoma

This is really beyond political correctness.  And one could even give a random person the benefit of the doubt without yelling bigot, racist, xenophobe, etc., but when it comes from this dude’s mouth, one cannot easily be so forgiving.

But beyond Inhofe’s person is the matter of what he is positing–namely, that profiling, based on ethnicity or race is the best way (or a good way or even an effective way)  to combat terrorists.  People like Michael Chertoff, a Bush guy, please remember, is one person that argues that profiling doesn’t work.  The arguments against racial & ethnic profiling are many, but they boil down to:  it doesn’t work.

Inhofe admits that McVeigh doesn’t fit the profile of a Middle Eastern Muslim man, but neglects that scores of other terrorists, including the Olympic Park Bomber (US White guy), the shoe bomber (Jamaican from Britain), the Dirty Bomber (U.S. Latino), the Lackawanna Six (US born Yemeni Americans), or Ft. Hood Shooter (Eastern US born and bred).

Place of birth, current residency, or/and ethnicity would do zero to help stop folks mentioned above.  Yes, they are all men and yes, they are all Muslim–77 virgins for martyrdom wouldn’t help much if they were’t–but, I argue, it is impossible to profile based on known religious beliefs and gender alone.  They’re are too many freaking men with Islamic beliefs in this world to be able to effectively profile ourselves into security.  It is a false and irrational belief that serves as nothing more than a Linus-grade security blanket.

Inhofe knows all of this.  And because he knows all this and makes “un p.c.” statements anyway, the Senator from Oklahoma is a steaming pile of excrement.

But profiling based on race and ethnicity would not have stopped any of the attacks or attempted attacks mentioned above.

And asking innocent people to endure “inconvenience” is a understating what is/will occur with racial profiling. Saying that because a person is a member of race x and therefore automatically suspect undermines both liberty and justice for all, as the phrase goes.

Again, the efficacy of the tactic is what is at question here and there is scant evidence that such can or will work in our efforts against terrorists.

Wait a minute. Inhofe said nothing about profiling “based on known religious beliefs and gender alone.” He mentioned race & ethnicity.

If, say, 90+% of known terrorists in the Western world are of Middle-Eastern descent, then it seems a reasonable place to start lookin’. And any reasonable-but-innocent people that fit the description (and I know a couple) should realize that and be willing to endure a little inconvenience in exchange for added security/safety.

Ya gotta start somewhere, and it makes a lot more sense to work the odds based on what you know.
