Elf magic at Google?

via kung fu grippe, it appears Google has done something pretty freakin cool if you’re a tele-phobe like myself. Google Voice (still free. still remarkable.) now gives you the ability to block a particular unknown caller/number. Once blocked, the caller gets a “Not in Service” recording if he or she should happen to call again. This cannot be good for telemarketers and other telecom nats.
And to vent a bit: it really cheeses me off that I am charged $ (minimal, but still!) to keep my landline name & number private. Why the hells bells is the default such that that info is public and not private. The friendly and sociable folks that desire random phone calls from assorted peoples should need to opt-in. Facebook tactics before Facebook tactics existed.
